Apple was sued by a domestic material supplier

According to AppleInsider Beijing time on January 23, local time Monday, Apple was sued by Hebei Hengbo New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Hebei Hengbo") for breach of contract. This marks a new twist on Apple's sapphire glass road.

Hebei Hengbo asked the jury to rule on the contract between the company and Apple for high-purity vanadium, a raw material used to make sapphire glass.

Hebei Hengbo requested to cancel the current contract with Apple and seek compensation for the economic losses caused by Apple's compensation for breach of contract terms. If the court does not support its claim, Hebei Hengbo requires Apple to execute the original contract.

Although there is no specific figure, the contract amount between Apple and Hebei Hengbo, or the expected loss of Hebei Hengbo is more than 75,000 US dollars - the lower limit of the amount of litigation in the civil dispute case accepted by the US Federal Court.

Today's lawsuit highlights the rough pace of Apple's use of sapphire glass in its mobile products.

In 2013, Apple and sapphire glass manufacturer GT Advanced Technologies reached a $758 million agreement to build a large sapphire glass manufacturing plant in Arizona. Under the agreement, GT Advanced Technologies will invest approximately $900 million in the project, of which $439 million is Apple's advance payment.

Before the agreement was reached, it has been rumored for several months that Apple is considering sapphire glass in mobile hardware such as iPhone and iPad.

GT Advanced Technologies filed for bankruptcy protection in 2014 – Apple called it “accident” at the time, marking the failure of the plan. In a filing with the bankruptcy court, GT Advanced Technologies said the Apple contract was unsustainable and Apple's request was "unbearable and annoying."

Apple said that before GT Advanced Technologies announced its application for bankruptcy protection, it tried to help the latter continue to perform the contract, but the sapphire glass pass rate problem and poor management that could not be resolved were doomed to failure.

At the end of 2014, Apple reached an agreement to resolve GT Advanced Technologies' $439 million outstanding debt.

Currently, Apple's use of sapphire glass is limited to some Apple Watch screens, Touch ID fingerprint sensors and iPhone rear camera covers.
